New York Notary Renewal: Online Process and Requirements

Sign in to New York Business Express, find the notary record on the dashboard, and start the renewal from that record. Keep the Department of State email address current so notices and deficiency requests reach you.

Begin before the printed expiration date. Do not assume a submitted renewal extends an expired commission.

Complete an oath of office for every reappointment or renewal and upload it in the required format. Review the record for the commissioned name, residence or qualifying business address, and other current information before submitting.

Pay the current $60 renewal fee and retain the confirmation. If the Department requests corrections or documentation, respond through the instructed channel.

The Department’s renewal instructions do not direct an ordinarily renewing notary to retake the written examination merely because the four-year term is ending. Study current law anyway because each commissioned notary remains responsible for compliance.

If the commission has lapsed or the individual is applying under different circumstances, follow the application path shown by the Department rather than assuming ordinary renewal treatment.

Continue retaining notarial journals for ten years as required; renewal does not restart or erase the retention period for older entries. Once processed, the Department emails the commission card.

Confirm the renewed commission is active before relying on the new term, and update tools or business materials that display outdated commission information.
