Find a current New York notary exam date
Download the current examination information and schedule from the Department of State immediately before traveling. The July–December 2026 schedule lists dates and times by testing location, but the state warns that sessions may change or be canceled.
Choose a site you can reach early. Late arrivals are not admitted, and seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. A date appearing in an older PDF is not confirmation that the session remains available.
Exam locations and walk-in procedure
The state schedule publishes participating cities, street addresses, room information, and session times. Current offerings can vary by schedule period, so use the live Department of State page rather than assuming a familiar office is testing.
Most applicants do not reserve a seat. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the listed start time with acceptable identification, the $15 fee, and two No. 2 pencils.
What to bring
Bring current, government-issued, photo-bearing signature identification from the official accepted list. Pay by an allowed method stated in the current notice; cash is not accepted.
- Current accepted photo and signature identification
- $15 nonrefundable examination fee
- Two No. 2 pencils
- No books, notes, dictionaries, large bags, or electronic aids
- Any approved special-testing-arrangement documentation
Weather, cancellations, and accommodations
For hazardous weather or emergencies, check the Department of State website and its official social channels or use the number in the examination notice. Do not call an individual exam site.
Applicants needing disability-related arrangements should submit the official special-testing request and supporting information through the process identified by the Department of State.
Plan around application timing
After passing, the mailed pass notice is used in the commission application and remains valid for two years. Schedule early enough to receive the result, prepare the oath, and submit a complete online application before that validity period ends.
New York attorneys and qualifying Unified Court System court clerks are exempt from the written exam, but they still follow the applicable commission application and fee process.
