Statutory Fees

Charging more than the $2.00 fee for simple acknowledgements or oaths is a common error.

Conflict of Interest

Notarizing documents for oneself or documents in which the notary has a direct financial interest.

Frequently asked questions

Your Questions Answered

Quick answers to the most common questions about the New York notary licensing exam

How do I pass the New York notary exam?

The key is studying the NYS Notary Public License Law booklet. Our practice questions are modeled after the actual exam to help you prepare.

What is the passing score for the NY notary exam?

The passing score is 70%, which means you need at least 28 out of 40 questions correct.

Where can I take the New York notary exam?

Exams are proctored and typically offered on a walk-in basis at various Department of State locations.

How much does the New York notary exam cost?

The exam fee is $15 per attempt.

How long are New York notary exam results valid, and can I retake the test?

A passing New York exam result is valid for two years. If you fail, the Department of State permits you to take the written examination again on another available date; results are reported as pass or fail rather than as a numerical score.

Who may apply for a New York Notary Public commission?

An applicant must reside in New York or maintain an office or place of business in the state, pass the examination, and submit the application, oath, and required fee. Current New York attorneys and certain Unified Court System clerks are exempt from the examination, but they are not exempt from the application requirements and fees.

How long is a New York notary commission, and what fees may a notary charge?

A New York commission lasts four years. State law generally permits a notary to charge up to $2 for administering an oath or affirmation or for taking an acknowledgment or proof of execution, so the statutory fee limits are important exam material.
