How New York reports results
The Department of State does not provide a numerical score. It mails a pass or fail notice as soon as results are available, so make sure the information supplied at the exam is accurate.
Keep the original passing notice secure and make a clear copy or scan for the online application. The notice is proof of satisfying the exam requirement; it is not a commission.
What to do after passing
Complete the oath of office and save it as the required PDF, create or use a personal NY.gov account, and apply through New York Business Express. Upload the requested pass-slip and oath documents and pay the $60 application fee.
Wait for the Department of State to issue the commission. Do not perform notarial acts merely because you passed or submitted an application.
Two-year validity of the pass notice
Official exam results are valid for two years. Apply while the passing result remains valid and retain the notice until the commission process is complete.
If the result is older than two years, expect to take the examination again unless a current statutory exemption applies. Follow the online application’s instructions for exam information.
If the result says failed
The official exam notice permits a candidate to retake on another date and time of the candidate’s choice. Check the newest schedule, return with the required identification and supplies, and pay another $15 examination fee.
Review weak New York topics against the license-law booklet before returning. The state does not provide a numerical breakdown, so use mixed practice to diagnose recurring errors.
