What the $10,000 bond does
The statutory bond provides protection for people harmed by covered notarial misconduct. If the surety pays a valid claim, it may seek reimbursement from the notary.
The applicant pays a bond premium rather than depositing $10,000. Optional E&O insurance protects different interests and does not replace the bond.
Take the oath and record both documents
Execute the constitutional oath and file and record the oath and original bond with the clerk of the county where a resident applicant lives. An adjoining-state applicant uses the qualifying Nevada employment county under the statute.
Obtain the certification needed for the Secretary of State application and keep proof of recording.
Budget for the entire process
Separate fixed government or portal charges from variable vendor and county costs.
- $45 traditional training shown by the official portal
- $35 Secretary of State commission application
- $10,000 bond premium from a surety provider
- County oath-and-bond recording charges
- Required seal and bound journal
- Optional E&O insurance
- $50 electronic-notary registration plus applicable training and technology costs
Bond and commission timing
Complete the county filing before the online commission application and while the training certificate remains valid. Make sure every document uses the same official name.
A recorded bond does not itself create a commission. Wait for the Secretary of State appointment.
