Nevada Notary Application and Requirements (2026)

An applicant must meet the qualifications in NRS Chapter 240, including age, residence or the limited adjoining-state employment route, character, and prior-commission requirements. Review the current application questions before spending money.

An adjoining-state applicant has additional Nevada employment, licensing, fingerprint, and annual-document duties. Do not assume an ordinary Nevada-resident checklist is sufficient.

Create an account on the official training portal, complete the assigned traditional-notary course, and pass the examination. Save the completion proof as a PDF or screenshot.

NAC 240 states that the course certificate is valid for 90 days after issuance, so coordinate training with the bond filing and online application.

Obtain a $10,000 surety bond, take the constitutional oath, and file and record both with the county clerk in the proper Nevada county. Obtain the filing certificate or other proof required for the state application.

The bond protects the public and does not eliminate the notary’s responsibility to reimburse a surety after a valid claim. Optional E&O insurance is separate.

Use the state’s online filing system, pay the nonrefundable $35 application fee, and upload the requested training/exam and county-filing proof. Use the same official signature consistently.

The Secretary of State issues the appointment after receiving a compliant application, fee, training proof, and certification that the oath and bond were filed. Do not notarize before appointment.

Apply before the 90-day training certificate expires, use the commissioned name consistently, confirm county jurisdiction, and upload legible documents. Keep every receipt and confirmation.
