When to begin renewing

The Notary Public Office FAQ says renewal notifications are emailed about 60 days before expiration. Log in before then to verify the email, residence, business, and employer information associated with the account.

Do not assume a pending request extends the old commission. Use the expiration date on the commission and complete the new-term requirements before performing acts under that term.

Hawaii notary renewal process

Submit the renewal through the same online portal used to manage the commission, follow the payment and examination instructions displayed for the account, and respond to requests from the office.

After approval and issuance, complete any new bond and Circuit Court filing steps required for the renewed term. Confirm the seal, signature specimen, commission details, and record-book practices before resuming work.

Renewal fees and other costs

HAR Chapter 5-11 lists separate fees for a renewal application and renewal of the commission. The portal controls the payment workflow, while the surety, court, and supply charges may come from other providers.

Budget for the renewed bond and any seal changes, as well as examination charges if the office directs you to test. Always use the current account instructions rather than relying on an old receipt or third-party checklist.

Late renewal and restoration

The official FAQ states that a commission may be renewed within one year after its expiration and identifies a $90 combined late-renewal/restoration charge. That restoration window does not authorize notarizing during the lapse.

If the commission has expired, stop performing acts until the office has restored or renewed it and all required activation filings are complete. A person who previously resigned must apply as a new applicant and retake the examination.

Keep records and account details current

A Hawaii notary record book must be retained for the required period even when a term ends. Do not discard the journal merely because a new commission begins.

Address and other account changes have separate notification rules and may carry processing fees. Prompt updates help ensure that the 60-day renewal notice reaches the correct email address.
