When you can schedule the Hawaii notary exam
Submit the online commission application and supporting letters first. After the Attorney General approves the application, the portal provides instructions to schedule and pay for the examination. An unapproved applicant cannot skip directly to an exam seat.
Use the same eHawaii.gov account for the application, scheduler, payments, and later commission steps. Keep the approval and scheduling notices with your records.
Oahu and neighbor-island examination dates
The Attorney General states that the examination is offered on Oahu at least once each month and periodically on Hawaii Island, Maui, and Kauai. The FAQ notes that Oahu sessions are usually held on the second Wednesday and neighbor-island sessions are generally quarterly, but the live schedule controls.
Do not plan travel from a copied calendar alone. Confirm the island, street address, date, reporting time, and parking instructions in the official scheduler shortly before the examination.
How to reserve and prepare for a session
Log in only after receiving approval, select an available session, pay the $10 examination fee, and retain the confirmation. If no convenient neighbor-island session appears, continue checking official availability or contact the Notary Public Office using its published channel.
- Match the registration name to your identification.
- Review the confirmation for permitted and prohibited items.
- Allow extra time for traffic, parking, and check-in.
- Study for a closed-book test before reserving a date.
- Use the official rescheduling rules if a conflict develops.
Rescheduling and missed exams
Hawaii administrative rules list separate charges for requests made more than 48 hours before an examination and those made less than 48 hours before it. Check the current portal instructions before changing a reservation because fees and procedures may be updated.
If you miss a session or need another attempt, use the official account and instructions rather than creating a second application unless the Notary Public Office directs you to do so.
What to do before exam day
Read the current Hawaii Notary Public Manual, HRS Chapter 456, and HAR Chapter 5-11. Then use timed Hawaii-specific practice to test whether you can apply identification, certificate, journal, fee, and prohibited-act rules without notes.
After the exam, the traditional-notary result is sent by written notice within 30 calendar days. Passing is followed by commission payment, bonding, and Circuit Court filing—not immediate authority to notarize.
